Home loans for people with disablities?
I was wondering if there are any type of home loans in the state of Maryland for families with a disabled member. We really need a house. We’ve been renting a 2 bedroom apartment for almost 3 years. I have an 11 year old son with Cerebral Palsy and a 8 month old daughter. We need more space. But, I can’t work… I take care of the kids… And my boyfriend is a auto mechanic and makes about $1100 every 2 weeks and my son receives about $600/mo from SSI…. Is there anything out there that could help our family?????
To Janet P:
I don’t work because there aren’t a lot of places that will hire me. If I have to take him to the doctor or therapy there aren’t a lot of places that would give me off every week… And he IS in school. He’s been in school since he was 3. Plus I wouldn’t be able to work weekends or summer time. Would you hire someone like that? I also have a almost 9 month old baby… I don’t have very much time at all. I don’t have time for myself. PLUS, I don’t have any credit because I choose not to get credit cards. My son needs constant care. He’s in a wheelchair, does not communicate, wears diapers, needs to be fed and have EVERYTHING else done for him. For me to be able to get a decent home for him (hadicap accessible) would be way too much money than I can ever afford. And I DO live within my means. I’m not out racking up credit card debit and buying things I can’t afford. I’m trying to take care of my son. His father owes me $17,500 in child support… And I’ll never see it…

It is against the law to discriminate based on disabilities. You (the borrower) are not even the one with a disability.
You should get your son into school, the public schools should have a program for him. That would be good for him, and you could then get yourself a job. I have a disabled daughter, and while I work at home, I do work, I do support my child. I do NOT collect SSI for her because I am raising her to be self supporting. You made a choice to stay home and not earn money for your family, you should live within the means of your choice.
But, if you want my tax dollars….
Your household income is 35800 a year, you should qualify for low income housing. HUD has some programs that are meant to bring up the bad neighborhoods, if you qualify for section 8 you qualify to buy one of those. Of course you may not qualify as you are low income by choice, you are not working.
Other then that you need to look to private charities, your church, etc.

The Access Home Loan scheme is designed to make buying a home affordable for lower-income homebuyers who have disabilities or disabled dependents living with them. The aim of the scheme is to provide people with an opportunity to achieve home ownership and to establish a proud, secure base within the community for themselves and their family.
The loan is designed for people on income that is within the rental income limits set down by the Department of Housing and Works. In fact, there are several programs.
