From KVM switches to Download Speeds and Ram upgrade advice.

After i bought my PC last year, with fantastic specs which includes extremely fast quad core Chipset, Ram to help its speed and a hard drive that holds a larger amount than I can hurl at it I have been looking at things that might better the system I already have.

1st If your processor is still competing with the market and is able to cope with running the software you are using you don’t have to think about starting all over again. If it isn’t you may want to think about a new board and processor. Normally however once you start down this route it is probably worth just purchasing a new desktop as the individual parts often come in at more than a new whole computer.

Second if we take it that your processor is quick enough, pack in the Ram it allows your processor the space to work at maximum efficiency. Look into which board you have and put the details into Google and you will then be able to pull out what Ram your System can use (the price of memory has reduced by such a great deal it’s of value investing in it).

3rd if you have a vast vault of music or pictures that you want to stockpile, manipulate, access, play then have a separate super fast drive to allow you to access your files quickly don’t be fooled by big disc volumes which have a rotation and read speed RPM of 5400 not acceptable, 7400 exceptable and 9600 Yeha!. These first three are things that will influence your every day experience of computing.

4th If you have an aging computer that is great, but no longer cuts the mustard, you don’t have to get rid of it you can use it as an auxiliary system that you access when you need the information stored on that system and let it use software in the background without effecting your new system in anyway. The use of a KVM switch is brilliant for this as it permits you to jump between computers using the same Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor to use both systems at the click of a button.

Make sure you get the best Broadband connection you can afford. You don’t have to have the massive file usage of an Austin Hughes Rack mount Server to need a download speed that wont look like its stuck when you download pictures, videos or music. Look online to find a provider in your localiy, then find out what the maximum download speed your line can actually carry, rather than the one proposed by the provider (it just stops you paying out loads of money for download rates you will never achieve) if you can tie in unlimited download volumes to this it helps though most individuals get caught by the fair use policy if you are downloading large files.

Hopefully this will have helped and I will add more at some other time.
