Designing Corporate Logos For Construction Companies
The construction sector is getting very competitive. More prominent firms handle the larger development projects while smaller and newer firms must display their quality with a number of subcontracts before moving on to bigger ones.
My design agency has just been given an assignment to develop a new construction logo design for a local construction business. To get things going, the art director and I dropped by our client’s office for a short interview to garner more information about the company.
Like many other companies we have interviewed, most companies realize they need a new look to compete but are not exactly sure what they want. That is where our services can make a positive impact.
Before starting on the logo design, we normally inquire about the history of the organization, its turnover, its philosophy, its specialty, its target market and why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a feel of things.
We learned that they are a relatively young firm, 11 years in the business with 4 big subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one more costly than the last. They are now seeking to adopt a blue ocean strategy and progress into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with few competitors - and subsequently seizing the opportunity to garner a reputation for themselves as one of the few names to engage this niche.
From the meeting, we ascertained that they have the necessary resources to take on medium scale development projects. Their identified niche also makes it easier to differentiate them from other developers.
At our office, we had our usual brainstorming session and and decided on the concept we would finally adopt. After that we employed the expertise of 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those ideas to logo designs.
After several days, the creatives were ready for show. Some designs utilized stylized text while others utilized construction related graphics like hardhats and spades to get the point across. Even though all 4 construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all stuck to 2 main points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with big money projects. To qualify for such projects, they must always be seen as a professional and responsible corporate citizen with admirable business ethics. Thus, the neat and clear designs reflected that adequately.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this organization is determined to penetrate. Obviously, the designs, either by color or graphics, further impresses the company’s dedication to the preservation of the environment.
Alas it is up to our clients to select one of the four design concepts. Alternatively they could make minor alterations but as professional designers, we must make sure the design ultimately keeps to the key points pointed out earlier.
