Azores/ Lisbon, Portugal Climate & Temperatures Info
Azores temperatures are pleasent thanks to the warming influence of the gulf stream and the temperate maritime climate. Due to their location in the mid atlantic (about 1,500 km (950 mi) from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from North America) humidity is fairly high with plenty of wet weather from October thru to March. Weather conditions are changeable and one can often experience everything but winter weather in a single day. The climate in Portugal is drier than the Azores in the summer but significantly colder in the north east in winter.
Each of the islands of the Azores has it’s own climate with localised microclimates produced by relief and shelter behind the mountains. The average annual rainfall decreases from west to east and ranges from 1600 to 700mms per year on average with much more falling on Mount Pico (The mountain of Pico on Pico Island, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft) in altitude is the highest mountain in Portugal).
Average temperature at Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island range between 11 and 16 degrees celcius in January and February and increase to between 18.7 and 24.8 in August. Rainfall is 99.6mms in March and this drops to 32.6 in July peaking at 136.3 in December. This compares with the lisbon climate on the mainland where average temperatures reach 27.8 in August and fall to 8.1 degrees in January. Lisbon has 121mms of rainfall in December but is much drier in the summer with only 6.1mms in July.
