When applying for an auto loan, how much should I request?
anonymous asked:
I am applying online, and in the loan requested amount I’m not sure what to put. It says be sure to ask for enough to cover taxes and etc. I’m getting a new Kia Rio, if that helps.

go to a car site (edmunds.com is good) and try to get a purchase price for the rio. add state taxes and put that in your loan request. hope this helps.

Most banks will only finance you for what the price of the car is, taxes and such so it really doesn’t matter what you ask for. A lot of banks will only give you a certain percentage of what you are asking for anyhow and want you to come up with the rest. The bank is not just gonna give you a certain amount that you ask for. They have to do paperwork with the car dealer (or whoever is sellng it) so they will know how much it cost. Just ask them to try to approve you for a higher amount before you start shopping. That way you know how much you can spend and won’t have to worry when you find a car you like.

In my experience they won’t lend you more than the car is worth. That way, if you default, they can hopefully get what you still owe back by selling the car to someone else.
